WS 10: Synergetic interaction of digital transformation and sustainability transformation in an organizational context – Twin Transformation

Workshop description

Twin Transformation describes the positively reinforcing interplay of profound organizational changes that aim to transform organizations into digital and sustainable ones. The Twin Transformation is a way of embedding digital responsibility in organizations. Individuals and organizations must take a holistic view of digital and sustainability objectives. However, many measures to achieve common digital and sustainable goals initially seem contradictory (for example, using and training AI algorithms and reducing energy consumption). The Twin Transformation provides a vehicle that integrates sustainability factors into digital transformation decisions. Within the framework of the Twin Transformation, goals and measures are considered together to leverage the strengths of both transformations and thus leverage previously unimagined potentials. In the Twin Transformation, sustainability (as a goal and purpose) and digitalization (as a transformation muscle and emission emitter) act together. In this context, not only the positive effects of digitalization on sustainability should be considered. Possible adverse effects must be considered in organizational decisions. It is often apparent that ecological and social impacts are not considered, especially in economically driven decisions within the classic digital transformation. Thus, the Twin Transformation helps organizations to be Digitally Responsible.

In the workshop, we will present the results of an interview study among senior executives on Twin Transformation. Moreover, the study’s results will be discussed and further developed with the participants. The results include Twin Transformation fields of action. Finally, the participants discuss possible starting points for further research projects and derive future research questions.

The process is thus divided into three parts:

  1. Presentation of the Twin Transformation fields of action
  2. Discussion and further development of the fields of action
  3. Identification of further research questions

We want to support the Twin Transformation of organizations. The workshop aims to create a network among the participants to stimulate a constructive exchange on current research results. Interdisciplinary exchange is essential to be able to do justice to the Twin Transformation as a holistic organizational transformation and to grasp its challenges from different perspectives adequately.
